Gary Christian nabs pair of USMTS top-5 results in the Show-Me State
The Summit United States Modified Series (USMTS) took on three nights of racing in Missouri from Friday through Saturday. Along the way, Gary Christian picked up two top-five finishes and climbed to sixth in the series point standings.
On Thursday, the inaugural Missouri Summer Classic brought 21 USMTS competitors to the 1/3-mile Electric City Speedway in Butler. Christian steered his Cyclo Propane No. 58x Modified to second in his heat race, then started from the second position in the 35-lap, $3,000-to-win A-Main. He led three laps early in the race before ultimately finishing fourth behind Tanner Mullens, Rodney Sanders and Trevor Hughes. Tyler Davis took fifth.
Friday saw 24 Modified teams visit Fulton’s Callaway Raceway, where a $5,000 winner’s share was on the line. Christian didn’t start his heat on the quarter-mile oval, but drove from 22nd to 15th in the 40-lap feature. With the result, he earned the night’s FK Rod Ends Hard Charger award.
The Missouri swing wrapped up on Saturday at the 3/8-mile Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri, with the 10th annual Mid-America Nationals. Christian, who was one of 21 USMTS drivers on hand, finished third in his heat race. He began the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win main event from the fifth spot and finished in the same position, rounding out the top five after Zack VanderBeek, Jim Chisholm, Sanders and Reece Solander.
