Gary Christian is runner-up in Larry Phillips Memorial prelim

Over the weekend, Gary Christian turned in a pair of strong efforts with the USRA Heartland Modified Tour (HMT) at Monett Motor Speedway in Monett, Missouri. He was in contention on both nights of the event and came away from the 3/8-mile oval with one second-place result.

Christian raced his Smith Equipment Company No. 58x Modified in a 36-car field in the opener on Friday. He set the overall quickest time in qualifying and won his heat race from the pole. He started from the second spot in the 30-lap, $2,075-to-win feature and was near the front throughout the race. He made a charge at leader Tanner Mullens during a green-white-checkered finish and ultimately came home just 0.487 seconds behind Mullens as runner-up. Terry Phillips, Rodney Sanders and Cole Anderson completed the top five.

On Saturday, Christian was once again the best qualifier, this time among 38 HMT Modifieds. He also won his heat race from the pole for the second consecutive night. He started third in the 40-lap, $7,575-to-win finale and was in second place near halfway. However, he spun and registered a 24th-place result with a DNF.
