Pair of top-10 results for Christian in USMTS Memorial Day weekend slate
Gary Christian raced in a trio of $5,000-to-win Summit USMTS National Championship shows from Friday through Sunday, taking a best finish of sixth.
Originally, the Memorial Day schedule was set to feature four consecutive days of racing. However, the 12th annual War in West Union at West Union, Iowa’s Fayette County Speedway was rained out on Thursday. As a result, Friday’s Hobo 100K Nickel Nationals at Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa, became the opener.
Christian, one of 50 USMTS Modified competitors at Hancock County, steered his Hochatown Saloon No. 58x ride to a fourth-place result in his heat race on the 4/10-mile track. He then drove from sixth to second in his B-Main and rolled off 15th to begin the night’s 40-lap feature. He climbed three spots and finished 12th.
On Saturday, another 50-car USMTS field was at the 3/8-mile Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minnesota, for the 21st annual Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge. Christian won his heat race and started eighth in the 40-lap main event. He ran inside the top five for much of the race’s first half before ultimately finishing seventh.
Sunday’s Jerry Hejna Memorial concluded the USMTS holiday swing with 34 Modifieds at Mason City (Iowa) Motor Speedway. Christian won his heat for the second night in a row, positioning him fourth to begin the 40-lap A-Main on the 1/3-mile oval. He again maintained a spot inside the top five for much of the race before coming home in the sixth spot.
After the Memorial Day weekend program, Christian is 10th in the USMTS National Championship standings.
